Dr. Sherry Montgomery is the director of the Independence Vocal Program (IVP). Dr. Montgomery double majored in Music Education and Vocal Performance at James Madison University, earned a master's degree in Music Education/Choral Conducting from Florida State University, and completed her Doctorate in Vocal Performance at Shenandoah Conservatory. She is certified in both choral/vocal and theater education.

Dr. Montgomery has taught voice and performing ensembles for all ages from elementary through college. She has directed over 20 musicals including The Music Man, Anything Goes, Once Upon a Mattress, Into the Woods, Addams Family, Chorus Line, and Beauty and the Beast, Matilda, High School Musical Jr, Oliver Jr. and Frozen Jr. She often serves as a guest vocal clinician presenting her research in Choral Vocology, which seeks to integrate vocal anatomy and science within the choral/vocal and musical theater curriculum.

Dr. Montgomery excels in teaching both contemporary and classical vocal styles in her private voice studio and choral/vocal students. Her students have been accepted to prestigious summer and master’s programs, won Cappie awards, performed on and off Broadway, the Kennedy Center, competed as finalists on NBC’s “The Voice", FOX’s “American Idol" and "Next Broadway Sensation."

When Dr. Montgomery is not busy making music, she enjoys time with her five children, spending time with friends and drinking her Starbucks coffee!
